Early Morning Fire Destroys Shacks in Gugulethu Informal Settlement Near N2

Cape Town – Early this morning, we visited an informal settlement in Gugulethu, known locally as Europe/Barcelona, located near the N2, after a devastating fire destroyed several shacks.

Residents told The Wall News that the fire started in the early hours of the morning and quickly spread through the densely packed informal structures. According to community members, the fire was allegedly caused by a man who accidentally left a stove burning inside his shack.

Due to the close proximity of homes in the settlement, flames spread rapidly, placing many families at risk and destroying several structures before emergency services could fully contain the situation.

Fortunately, firefighters from the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service responded quickly to the scene. Their rapid intervention prevented the blaze from spreading further and potentially destroying the entire community.

Residents expressed relief that the emergency response teams arrived in time, as the situation could have been far worse.

Following the incident, teams from the City of Cape Town were already on site working to repair damaged infrastructure, including burnt electricity cables, in an effort to restore services to affected residents as quickly as possible.

Community members thanked the firefighters and the City of Cape Town for their quick response during the emergency.

At this stage, authorities are still assessing the full extent of the damage and determining the exact cause of the fire.
